PREFACE

Throughout my many years working in the security industry I have met a wide range of people from all over the world: males and females of all ages and job descriptions.

In many of my conversations regarding guns it surprised me that one question kept reoccurring, "Based on your expertise what type of gun do you recommend for me to purchase?" Having spent numerous years training and applying many
types of shooting techniques to a wide variety of weapons, I decided to thoroughly research the available information on guns.

I started by visiting a large gun store in Los Angeles, California. I spent hours closely examining the variety of guns they sold, while recalling my training on the advantages and disadvantages of each one of these weapons.
At the same time, I observed the people who entered the large store. They were shopping for a gun or looking to gain more knowledge on the different models and their capabilities. I realized that most of these people had very little knowledge, if any at all, regarding guns and other weapons.

I was shocked to see a small elderly lady leaving the store with a gun more suitable to an actor in the Terminator movies. I realized that many of these people settled on purchasing a gun based solely on the weapon's price and appearance. Instead of educating the clients on the functionality of the weapon, I observed the sales representatives taking advantage of the
client's lack of knowledge and using smooth sales pitches to facilitate the sales. It became obvious to me that people would benefit from an informative professional guide in regard to purchasing a suitable gun.

To enable me to compose a comprehensive guide on purchasing guns, I began reading all of the available literature on the subject. I spent countless hours researching the topic, reviewing gun magazines and publications in public libraries, bookstores and the Internet. Simultaneously, I visited
dozens of gun stores and consulted with several professional gun instructors.

The information that I found was complex, technical and primarily intended for professionals in the security and law enforcement industries. There were lists on the types of guns available, descriptions of several basic shooting techniques, lists on the types of bullets used for specific guns and the
ballistic information of the bullets.

After all the time I spent researching guns, I still could not find a resource able to answer the question at hand, "What type of gun will best suit each person?" It is important to maximize the compatibility of the gun to the size of the user's hand. I have concluded through research that there are three main parameters by which to choose the gun most suitable to a
particular person:

1. The hand size of the person holding the gun (pages 5-8).

2. The person's profession or intended use of the gun (pages 10–99).

3. The Gun type (pages 101–144).

A person's profession is typically a reflection of their entire lifestyle;
therefore, in determining the appropriate gun type for each person, I took the liberty to generalize personality characteristics and environmental settings typical of each specific profession listed.  I based my recommendation on this criteria.

This guide addresses the three parameters in a simple and easy to understand fashion. This format enables anyone to feel comfortable in making a suitable
weapon selection.
